It is a gain insofar as we learn that that to which the "good definition" is to apply, the essence of nihilism, leads us into a realm which requires a different language. If turning-towards belongs to "Being" and in such a way that the latter is based on the former, then "Being" is dissolved in this turning. It now becomes questionable what Being which has reverted into and been absorbed by its essence is henceforth to be thought of. Accordingly, a thoughtful glance ahead into this realm of "Being" can only write it as [the figure.] The drawing of these crossed lines at first only repels, especially the almost ineradicable habit of conceiving "Being" as something standing by itself and only coming at times face to face with man. According to this conception it looks as if man were excluded from "Being." However, he is not only not excluded, that is, he is not only encompassed into "Being" but "Being," using the essence of man, is obliged to abandon the appearance of the for-itself, for which reason, it is also of a different nature than the conception of totality would like to have it, which encompasses the subject-object relationship.

The symbol of crossed lines can, to be sure, according to what has been said, not be a merely negative symbol of crossing out. Rather it points into the four areas of the quadrangle and of their gathering at the point of intersection. The being present as such turns towards the essence of man in which the turning-towards is first completed, insofar as the human being remembers it. Man in his essence is the memory of Being, but of [the depiction of “Being” in the figure]. This means that the essence of man is a part of that which in the crossed intersected lines of Being puts thinking under the claim of an earlier demand. Being present is grounded in the turning-towards which as such turns the essence of man into it so that the latter may dissipate itself for it.

Es bleibt insofern ein Gewinn, als wir erfahren, daß jenes, dem die »gute Definition« gelten soll, das Wesen des Nihilismus, uns in einen Bereich verweist, der ein anderes Sagen verlangt. Gehört zum »Sein« die Zuwendung und zwar so, daß jenes in dieser beruht, dann löst sich das »Sein« in die Zuwendung auf. Diese wird jetzt das Fragwürdige, als welches fortan das Sein bedacht wird, das in sein Wesen zurück und darin aufgegangen ist. Dementsprechend kann der denkende Vorblick in diesen Bereich das »Sein« nur noch in folgender Weise schreiben: das Sein. Die kreuzweise Durchstreichung wehrt zunächst nur ab, nämlich die fast unausrottbare Gewöhnung, »das Sein« wie ein für sich stehendes und dann auf den Menschen erst bisweilen zukommendes Gegenüber vorzustellen. Dieser Vorstellung gemäß hat es dann den Anschein, als sei der Mensch vom »Sein« ausgenommen. Indes ist er nicht nur nicht ausgenommen, d. h. nicht nur ins »Sein« einbegriffen, sondern »Sein« ist, das Menschenwesen brauchend, darauf angewiesen, den Anschein des Für- sich preiszugeben, weshalb es auch anderen Wesens ist, als die Vorstellung eines Inbegriffes wahrhaben möchte, der die Subjekt-Objekt-Beziehung umgreift.

Das Zeichen der Durchkreuzung kann nach dem Gesagten allerdings kein bloß negatives Zeichen der Durchstreichung sein. Es zeigt vielmehr in die vier Gegenden des Gevierts und deren Versammlung im Ort der Durchkreuzung.

Das An-wesen wendet sich als solches zum Menschenwesen, worin sich die Zuwendung erst vollendet, insofern jenes, das Menschenwesen, ihrer gedenkt. Der Mensch ist in seinem Wesen das Gedächtnis des Seins, aber des Sfcfös. Dies sagt: das Menschenwesen gehört mit zu dem, was in der kreuzweisen Durchstreichung des Seins das Denken in den Anspruch eines anfänglicheren Geheißes nimmt. An-wesen gründet in der Zuwendung, die als solche das Menschenwesen in sie verwendet, daß es für sie sich verschwende.
